LAND ROVER FREELANDER vs ESCAPE

Here is the Land Rover Freelander. I've seen it a few times at some auto shows and it really does look a lot like an Escape (in both size and design). Now that Ford owns Land Rover, I would think that they will use the same underbody for these 2 SUVS in the future.

Re: LAND ROVER FREELANDER vs ESCAPE

Was that designed before or after Escape. Do you know if the Land Rovers be sold here in the US or what they cost?

Bright Red Escape I found online today

Freelander not free

The Freelander is supposed to be sold here in the US starting this fall and according to Motor Trend magazine it will cost $25,000 to $30,000. They are sold in England right now and will be imported.

Landrover Freelander & Ford Escape

The Landrover Freelander was designed by Jerry McGovern who now works for Ford. The Freelander was a co-opertative design initiative between Honda and the then (now defunct) Rover Group. The CRV & Freelander share the same basic platform and door skins - that's where the similarity ends. The Freelander was penned well before the Escape/Tribute twins were thought of. Although now that Ford own Landrover outright - it has been touted that these three models will probably share the same platform by 2004-5.
It would be interesting to find out if Jerry McGovern had any input in the Escapes design due to the similarity of the front ends of both the vehicles.

Re: Landrover Freelander & Ford Escape

Is this guy in Dearborn or England now that Ford owns LandRover? Did he have any input into the Honda CRV? It also has a very "blocky" kind of front end (one of its best features).

Re: Landrover Freelander & Ford Escape

Looking at those pictures (the ones of the yellow Land Rover above) it's hard to believe that the Escape and Land Rover are not the same vehicle underneath. This looks more like an Escape than a Tribute does --and they are the same Suv underneath.

If I wanted to post some pictures here, could someone tell me how I would do it? Thanks.

Re: Landrover Freelander & Ford Escape

Jerry McGovern had no imput into the CRV apart from the platform design which was shared between the CRV and Freelander. Japanese stylists took over from there as far as the CRV's concerned. McGovern now works for Fords Premier Auto Group (Lincoln, Jaguar, Landrover, Volvo) but I'm still not sure if he had any input in the Escape.

Land Rover/Freelander

Have been in Scotland for a month, just got back today. Saw lots of the new Rovers there.A friend there has one, only major difference I can see is the Rover has a diesel available. The fit and finish is no different than the Escape. The interior is not quite as sporty, and it has no plastic trim on the doors, only the wheel wells, and bumpers. All and all,it looks like a VERY similar, and overpriced vehicle compared to our Escapes. Much less room in the cargo area behind the seat, and spare tire is mounted outside.Besides all that, they got the steering wheel on the wrong side!!!!
Happy to be back on the right side of the road ,Mac

Ford & Land Rover Freelander

The plans are for Ford to combine the Land Rover Freelander platform with the Escape design from what I read in Road & Track. This was the issue that had pictures of the Escape and the Land Rover at the car shows earlier this year so it was in the magazine about 3 months ago. One of the pictures above was also in the mag.
