I agree with you, but...

You are right when you say the cost of gas is minimal when compared to the cost of the vehicle. Even if you paid twice that amount, $3000 is still small when compared to the vehicle.

So why do we worry about mileage? Because for a lot of people, $1500 is a lot of money. If I could cut that number in half, then I just saved $750.

Of course there are other reasons. Some of us feel it our duty to the environment to use less. Note that I didn't say use none, I'm a practical environmentalist. But I still think we should be able to get the vehicle we want.

Just by way of example, I'll bore you with my thought process on getting a hybrid escape.

1. I want more room than I have right now in my '92 Integra.
2. I want 4wd.
3. The Ford Escape rocks, and meets my desires for a new vehicle.
4. I want to minimize my impact on the earth.
5. Technology is so cool!
6. 99% of my driving is in town.
7. I should get a hybrid.

You will never hear me say anything about saving money on gas becuase I'm well aware that I'll pay more for my vehicle in the end than any of you with the v6. But I will use less gas, and pollute very little. That's enough for me.

Which is why I said "unless they drive an extreme amount"... I can understand that... But the average Excursion driving soccer mom does not drive 500 miles a week...

To me Fuel Economy is a secondary factor in deciding on a car... If even that...

My eyes are deceiving me, surely... But this is not a discussion of the hybrid... This is what started this tangent...

If I wanted to buy an Excursion, surely fuel economy is not one of my biggest concerns... Or I'd get the Expedition... But then I'd end up in an Explorer... Or better yet an Escape... But the Escape gas mileage (non-hybrid) is not substantially better than the Excursion... At least not to the point that there would be such a cost consideration that my initial want for an Excursion would be overridden by it.

No, I wasn't trying to turn it into a hybrid discussion. I was just trying to address your point that gas mileage is a minor concern to you when buying a vehicle. I was offering a second viewpoint.

I completely agree. I fyou want an Excursion then fuel economy isn't one of your real concerns.

A secondary factor... Well, there I completely agree with you (again). If you noticed, my environmentalist side came in 4th, well after my desire for a 4wd (that I probably don't need).

But you can't deny that it is a factor (not that you did). Different people place priorities in different places. For me the environmental side is higher than for you. For others, they will buy a Civic HX, or Echo to save money on both the car and gas. I doubt you'll see too many people buying a fully loaded Prius to save money.

Well, I can understand getting a hybrid escape - though if I were to get one it would have to be 1) available and 2) proven... But given the choice between a hybrid and non-hybrid Escape, with little price difference (right now the difference is too high) I could see going for the hybrid. But if what I want is a Mustang, I cannot see myself settling for a Focus due to MPG alone (Not to knock the Focus)...

My #1 priority when buying a vehicle is, always, that I want it, everything else is secondary...

I know we're off topic about hybrids and gas mileage, but another factor beyond just mileage is pollutants. The SMOG index for the car, etc. While I agree that the Escape probably shouldn't be purchased based on a financial decision with gas costs in mind, the Hybrid will "pollute" far less which is a good selling point for many (unless you want to debate the pollution of making the batteries and what you do with them after their 10 year cycle, but that's for another time...)

I heard that it is a psycological thing ..... Even how folks will flock to a gas station where the gas per gallon is two cents less.
