Ford scraps 2004 Model Year Hybrid Launch

Ford Escape
Escape HEV Delayed... again
Ford Scraps Start Of
Fleet Trials For Escape Hybrid

______ : : fordvehicles.com/escapehybrid : :

Ford has scrapped plans to produce a small number of Escape petrol-electric hybrid compact SUVs by the end of this year for fleet customers, according to Automotive News. Instead, the company will conduct fleet testing internally only before launching retail production of the 2005 Escape hybrid. The retail Escape HEV will then finally be made available to the public in the second half of 2004, probably in the spring the report said.

According to Ford, the hybrid Escape will get 35 mpg to 40 mpg in city driving using the manufacturer's 2.3-litre, four-cylinder engine, a 65-kilowatt electric motor and a 28-kilowatt generator. The vehicle will have off-road and towing capability and acceleration comparable to the 201-hp Escape V6 engine, the report added.

_____

It was also noted that the upcoming 2005 Mariner, a badge-engineered Mercury version of the Escape, will debut in autumn 2004 and will not be getting a Hybrid version.

Beating the drum some more... hybrids are too expensive to produce versus the expected fuel savings. Sure, they might have thought about selling 'em to fleets... but at $25+K a copy, which no fleet manager is going to sign-off on, that's for sure.

No way. Absolutely no way.

public view hybrid trial debut is delayed because of a late ordered body panel redesign of all upcoming escapes including the new hev. memo is that escapes need to be more substantially differentiated from MY01-04 than was originally proposed and approved

Problem is the repair people, can you imagine the average grease monkey (AKA TOMR) working on a vehicle that has 300 volts in it????????

They are changing the new Escape design? How different will it look from the current ones? Where do you get your information?

"Somethings wrong, somethings amiss" - that old guy in Army of Darkness

I have a sinking feeling that Ford is having a problem with the hybrid & we aint gonna see it for sale in the near future.... (I still rem the very optimisitic projections of late 2002 sales heh)

Arrow NEWS: Hybrid Sales Losing Power

How To Recharge Hybrid Interest?
Hybrid Hype Losing Power

Except in select areas of California and some midwest states, sales of the gas-savers have lost steam even as new models like the Ford Escape HEV are proposed.

Why hybrid?
Maybe because it saves on gasoline by combining an electric motor with an internal combustion engine, offers great gas mileage and is easy on the ear.

...But wait.
It costs $5,000 more than a conventional car, and unlike the upcoming Escape HEV, many look boxy or downright strange or worse just plain boring. Critics even question potential market success, noting that sales are propped up by a host of tax benefits.

Dealerships in California and some remote midwest locations like Boulder Colorado rank among the top hybrid sellers in the nation. Boulder residents are already lining up for the 2004 hybrid cars, sight unseen.

That flies in the face of the national trend, as sales are plummeting across the country. All three hybrid models being sold today - Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight and Toyota Prius - posted declines in sales this May, June and July from a year ago.

_________
Honda Insight above, Toyota Prius below

This may not bode well for upcoming Escape Hybrid sales. Sales of the Toyota Prius dropped 33 percent, the Honda Civic Hybrid slid 8 percent and the Honda Insight fell a whopping 46 percent.

In contrast, sales of the conventional Honda Civic rose 0.14 percent in the same period. Sales of the Toyota Echo (which closely resembles the Prius) jumped nearly 15 percent while those of the Toyota Camry (whose price is closer to the Prius) fell 3.77 percent.

The reason might be the hybrid hype seen before and during the Iraq war. "The main reason for the decline is that people are less concerned about gasoline prices now than they were a year ago," said Paul Taylor, chief economist of the Washington, D.C.-based National Automobile Dealers Association. "Also, normal consumers look at technology and say the cost needs to come down.

Escape Hybrid website

Just found the Escape Hybrid website - it's at www.fordvehicles.com/escapehybrid - don't know if folks have seen this yet or not, but I just came across it.

It says the Escape Hybrid is: "Available to Consumers in Late Summer 2004"

You can also sign up there to receive a newsletter:
